One of the best things about the Android ecosystem is its flexibility. While the core operating system is the same across all devices, OEMs can customize their version of Android to look and feel very different. Motorola leans toward a near-stock experience like Google Pixel phones, while brands like OnePlus apply a heavily-skinned version with OxygenOS.

But one of my favorite Android skins still remains Samsung’s One UI. Even though Samsung has had a slow rollout with One UI 7, its phones are packed with genuinely useful features. However, many of these features are often overlooked. Here are a few features on Samsung Galaxy devices that deserve more attention.

Use Secure Folder to keep things private and safe

Hide files, apps, and photos in one place

Smartphones are incredibly personal devices, and we all store sensitive data on them. But sometimes, you might need to hand over your phone to a friend or family member. That’s where Samsung’s Secure Folder comes in.

Secure Folder lets you lock away apps, files, photos, and videos in a protected space that only you can access. You can even add separate authentication, different from your main lock screen, for added security. Here’s how to set it up.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Security and privacy.
  3. Select More security settings.

If you’re not signed in to your Samsung account, you’ll be prompted to log in. You’ll also be asked to create a separate security method to unlock the Secure Folder. Once setup is complete, the Secure Folder app will appear in your app drawer. You can easily move apps, files, and media into it using the + button inside the app.

Clone apps easily with Dual Messenger

Use two accounts for WhatsApp, Telegram, and more

Most Android smartphones now support dual SIM, letting you use two phone numbers on the same device. Naturally, that also means you might want to use messaging apps like WhatsApp or Telegram with both numbers. While these apps offer multi-account features, switching between them isn’t always seamless.

Samsung’s Dual Messenger makes this easier by allowing you to clone supported messaging apps. You can run two separate instances of apps like WhatsApp, so each phone number can have its own dedicated app. Here’s how to set it up:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Advanced features.
  3. Scroll down and select Dual Messenger.
  4. Toggle on the app you want to duplicate.

Use Edge Panels to help you get things done faster

Access your favorite apps and tools faster

If you often multitask on your Galaxy phone and rely on a fixed set of tools and apps, like screenshot, calculator, or Google Translate, Edge Panels can save you a lot of time. This feature adds a slide-out panel on the edge of your screen, giving you quick access to your most-used apps and shortcuts. Here’s how to enable and customize Edge Panels:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Display.
  3. Scroll down and enable Edge Panels.

Swipe your palm to take screenshots

A fast and easy way to capture your screen

Phones from brands like OnePlus and Honor let you take screenshots with a simple three-finger swipe. However, on Samsung Galaxy phones, the default method is to use the Power + Volume Down button combo, which isn’t always convenient. Thankfully, Samsung includes a gesture-based option too. With Palm swipe to capture, you can take a screenshot by simply swiping the side of your hand across the screen.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Advanced features.
  3. Select Motions and gestures.
  4. Turn on the toggle for Palm swipe to capture.

Pick different audio outputs for every app

Separate music and calls to different devices

One of the best hidden features on Galaxy phones is the ability to set different audio outputs for different apps. For example, if you’re playing music on a Bluetooth speaker while scrolling through Instagram, you probably don’t want Instagram reels interrupting your music on the speaker.

Samsung’s Separate app sound feature lets you route audio from specific apps to different devices. It’s super handy if you’re using multiple audio sources at the same time. Here’s how to set it up:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Sounds and vibration.
  3. Scroll down and select Separate app sound.

Prompt to choose app and audio device for separate app sound

  4. Turn on the toggle.
  5. Choose the app (like Instagram) and assign a different audio output device.

4

Use two Bluetooth devices at the same time

Share audio or use multiple devices together

If you’re traveling with a friend or family member and want to listen to music together, it’s usually not possible on most smartphones since they can’t output audio to multiple Bluetooth devices at once. Apple offers this feature on the iPhone, but only for its own ecosystem devices. However, Samsung lets you do it with any two (or more) Bluetooth devices. Here’s how to use it:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Connect both Bluetooth devices to your phone.
  3. Pull down the Quick Settings panel and tap Media output.
  4. Select the Bluetooth devices you want to play audio through.

3

Use voice commands to click a photo

Say “Smile” or “Capture” and let your phone do the rest

New Samsung phones like the Galaxy Z Flip 6 support gesture-based photo capture. This works by just showing your hand to the camera, and the phone takes a shot automatically. But if your Galaxy phone doesn’t support this feature, you can still take hands-free photos using voice commands.

By enabling voice control, you can trigger your camera to take pictures with simple words like “Smile”, “Capture”, or “Cheese”, and even start recording videos by saying “Record video.” Here’s how to set it up:

  1. Open the Camera app.
  2. Tap the Settings icon.

Draw perfect shapes to highlight in photos

Create circles, squares, arrows, and more easily

We often send photos to point something out or highlight a specific part of the image. But drawing a neat circle or arrow with your finger rarely turns out the way you want. Thankfully, Samsung’s Gallery app has a simple trick that helps you draw perfect shapes when marking up photos. Here’s how to use it:

  1. Open the Gallery app.
  2. Select the image you want to edit.
  3. Tap the Edit icon, then tap the Draw button.

Switch to Easy Mode for a simpler interface

Bigger icons, simpler menus, and less clutter

If you’ve handed a Samsung Galaxy phone to someone older in the family, or if you personally prefer a cleaner and less cluttered layout, you should try Easy Mode. This feature simplifies the interface, making it easier to navigate. It’s ideal for beginners or anyone who just wants a more straightforward experience.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Display.
